And about the Graphics:
We hope to bring something that looks pleasing when it's
representing a good character and visibly evil but not ugly when
representing an evil character. I think it would be an easy way out
to use excessive brutality, gore or sexual content to sell our games.
We will try to show a battle between good and evil without using
the easy way of shock with excess. Inspired by the works of Tolkien
for example.
This is how I look at this why is the Lord of the Rings
considered an amazing book yet is without detailed descriptions
of brutality or sexual content and still is an amazing book. I think
it is because the author had other things to offer. Why is anime made
fun of if they depict excessive amounts of blood and gore and called
fan service for scenes with sexual content that does not have anything
to do with the story? I think because it pulls the person out of the story
and reminds them it is just there to keep them entertained.
So Tolkien did not have to do this because he did not need to, because
of his content perfectly covered what he intended.
So my goal for our studio is to avoid misplaced extremes.
And use that as a motivator to look for more beautiful
and/or meaningful options in the looks of our games.
I want to talk also about a second layer concerning graphics.
It is much less important than the first but since I grew up with games
from when pixel art was a necessity trough ever reducing size of pixels
to the modern era where pixel art became popular again for being retro
and reminding us of the old games nostalgia. So Let me say first I play
good modern pixel art games I love them I just get flooded with
the ideas how awesome it would be in smooth graphics. I appreciate
the authors for every bit of experience they brought me with their pixel
art game. So that is all fine but I am not nostalgic one bit. I am happy
for what I played when it was a necessity to have pixels but now it is time
to move on.
Now I play a good pixel-art game out of necessity because it is a good
game unfortunately in pixels. Because I still have that same old joy from
ongoing advancement of smaller and smaller pixels and the joy of seeing
the first game you could hardly see any pixels I get it still with every modern
game and I am so happy I left the pixels necessity behind. And when I think
of the old games I am just thinking what would the authors have done
if today's graphics where available it would have been so much more
of an awesome game.
So I would honor the old authors not with returning to the limitations they
hated but to improve on their ideas with modern graphics which they longed for.
So we do our best to not produce ugly things but also you will not get any
pixel art from us in any game that is my desire. If you do see something good
from any old game (which I don't guarantee) it will be some mechanic or some
idea they had to cripple in order to put it in the old game because of
limitations, now in its full glory I hope it will become like the development
from a sapling to a full grown tree in Bloom. There where some good ideas
in the old games. And so We can't promise Iblard Jikan but we sure like that
direction and we will use as few pixels as we can manage.
